Venue
Freiberg
Freiberg is located in the east of Germany and in the centre of the Free State of Saxony. The town was founded in 1162 and historically has been the centre of the mining industry in the Ore Mountains. This tradition is accompanied since 1765 by the oldest university of mining and metallurgy in the world, often just known as the Mining Academy (Bergakademie).
One of the most important architectonic sights in Freiberg is the cathedral of St. Mary that was built in 1501. It comprises several artistic treasures, including the Golden Portal from 1225 and two Silbermann organs. Actually, the organ workshop of Gottfried Silbermann was located in the city centre of Freiberg.
In the historic ambience of Freudenstein Castle, the Freiberg University presents over 3,500 minerals, precious stones and meteorites in the permanent exhibition 'terra mineralia'. This offers a mineralogic journey with treasures from all around the world. The tradition of mining can be discovered in the city museum or even better by a journey into one of the ore mines open to visitors.
